The Story
Hey everyone! Sorry it took so long to post again. I was finding a new home to share the blog and was just very busy. I am a bit tired tonight but I thought I would get out Chapter 5 for you all. Let's see what we learn tonight. Get your pencils ready...
So we begin the next chapter with the princesses mother asking if she is going with her to town. The princess is going to go but doesn't want to see Sir Eloquence there. She was happy the knight had stopped pursuing her hand and she did not expect him to be bothering her in the village anymore. Although she was happy that he was gone (even after her father embarrassed him) but she did miss him a little bit. The princess thought she was really missing his affectionate words and attention that she sometimes wished for. I think that is just the stupidest thing. Honestly- I think the Princess was missing all the attention because she is just a stuck up.
Her mother told her not to worry about him anymore and that she and her husband were very proud of her decision. Her mother told her she never has to fear what others think when you know what you have done is right.
The princess then goes on, "I know, Mother. But no one understands why I do not go to any of the dances or parties. They say I will never meet anyone and that I do nothing but sit in the castle and dream." He mother of course says "Nay, my daughter, they admire thy beauty, thy graciousness, and most of all, they purity. A few will always criticize. Perhaps they are jealous. In addition, it is likely that they feel guilty due to their own carelessness, an rather than changing their ways, they think it is easier to find fault with any who take the narrow way." The princess goes on saying that they speak lies of her. She thinks instead of being a candle as Father says she is she fears that she is discouraging any from following the way of purity. Everyone says her example is foolish and ridiculous." (I personally think it is foolish and ridiculous and I can't blame the young townspeople) Her mother gives her the wisdom only she knows "Not so, far many more respect thy ways than thou knowest. But as a crow cries noisily and interrupts an otherwise peaceful world, so the few critics are usually verbal while the admires remain silent." Then the princess wants to defend her motives but her mother says she cannot because it will only give credence to the lies. A princess must let her life and good works be her defense against any who seek to slander. And now we get to meet another person and you will NEVER guess who it is. It is the princesses friend- Maiden Flirtelia (hmmm I can only assume by her name what she is like ;) ) The princess has not seen her in weeks. She goes to visit with her and will meet her at the Fountain Circle after lunch.
Maiden Flirtelia says the princess looks lovely today. They spend the next few hours looking around Market Street, visiting the tapestry shop, and picking up some pastries at the bakery. They then sat down at Fountain Circle to talk. I have to interrupt again. I think it is sort of rude for the princess to meet up with her so-called friend for the morning. She wasn't meeting her she just barged in and spent the morning with her uninvited. Maybe it doesn't bother you my fellow readers but it bothers me. So Flirtelia chatted excitedly about the wonderful time she had at the Summer Ball. I guess the princess didn't go because Flirtelia said she should have went and meet all the enchanting young men. She had a romantic time with Sir Striking. The princess gets mad and says that she has not changed at all because all the Maiden can think about is men, romance, parties and weddings. Maiden Flirtelia said that the princess hasn't changed at all. Hold on here is the best part. The maid asks the princess "Will you ever grow up and start enjoying your life?" (hahah :) ) She heard that Sir Eloquence was seeking her hand and the princess never took time to consider him. The maiden asks if the princess knew he was one of the most popular knights. The princess goes on with , "Why take time for something one already knows will come to nothing, especially when it is neither wise nor safe?" The Maid then suggested that then she should have recommended the princess have the knight get to know her. The princess being a jerk said she should just go up to him herself because she has ample opportunities to converse with the knights."
The Maiden doesn't give up and says the princess should go to one of the dances and she would arrange a match for her. The princess says that the Maiden just doesn't understand. The maiden says she doesn't understand. She can't understand why the princess says no to a choice knight and why she would miss out on so many fun and harmless activities. As they were talking they were interrupted by a company of horseman who were on urgent business for the king. They stopped to make a proclamation. The princess and maiden joined the crowd to hear the message. It was then that the princess caught her first glimpse of Sir Valiant. he was well known in the kingdom for his heroic deeds, and well respected loyalty to the king. The princess had her her father speak of him but she had never known that he was so handsome or youthful. With dignity he spoke to the people and with a sparkle in his eye he bade them farewell. The princess could not help but notice that he far surpassed the other nights she knew in word and conduct. (Because she has so much evidence of this hearing him speak ONCE). and he was so very... The princesses mother interrupts her thoughts. They head home. All the way home the princess was thinking. With fresh and new expectancy, all her dreams were coming back: romantic, falling in love, living happily ever after with... with... with someone like Sir Valiant.
Toward evening she decided to go for a stroll where she meets the alligator. He asks if she made the right choice with Sir Eloquence. The princess says, "yes, vary." The gator marvels at her innocence and he fears for it For she is no longer a mere sixteen, young and sweet. She is nearing eighteen where it is time to become her own boss. Ummm Sarah Mally how can she be turning 18? She is 16? and it has only been what a day to a few weeks since the Spring Fair. I know I wasn't homeschooled Gothard style but I think a person is 16 than 17 THEN they are 18. But I don't know... I wrote notes during math class... it was my worst subject. Can anyone help me out haha j/k. So the princess says nothing but her blue eyes gaze at the glistening moon. The gator wants to know what she is thinking about. the princess thinks the stars are beautiful and the gator thinks she is quiet tonight and she is rude and says in her own way the gator should be too. Burn princess that is a mean burn. The gator goes on to say that the princess is in deep thought about something or someone. He goes on to say it is not to late for her to change her mind about Sir Eloquence and says she is free to do as she wishes and she could leave the castle this very night. Now you and I all know that is true. She might just run away if this was any other story but Alas we are reading a story about radiant purity and the princess with no name. Instead the princess says "Really, I marvel at thy ignorance. Art thou too blind to see that I never have, nor ever will, love a man like him?" (Yet she was crushing on him like in the beginning of this chapter). The gator asks who she will love and the princess says someone heroic and valiant (oh COME ON that is giving away the ENDING using that knights last name in her description) not merely skilled in speech. Someone who is kind and pure in heart. Someone who does not play with white roses that belong to others. The gator says in reply, "Dreams are good. But you must learn to give up certain ideals in order to face reality." and the princess says, "And treat casually what ought to be treasured and protected?" The gator thinks the princess is too careful and is afraid to try anything new. One little mistake will not matter. And the princess says, "There is no such thing as a little sin. Good Night!"
My Thought: Poor Gator! I also think this story is going to go downhill from here. The gator should join a different story because the princess is a lost cause...
Sarah's Advice
I am going to run through this because.. well I always do. Remember this is Sarah's advice not mine. Your princess daydream and ask the Lord about their futures. That is okay but the enemy will use this area to distract us from your focus on Christ. Not only do our own thoughts easily drift toward romance, but there seems to be plenty of people out there anxious to "help" us be distracted by guys. After all, starting in preschool, well-meaning adults and relatives begin asking us if we have a boyfriend. Then, to make matters worse, the majority of girls seem to be anxious to tell us about their special someone, or quick to point out whichever guy they presently think is the cutest.
The next section is called What is I have a Crush? Don't panic- it is normal. The problem isn't so much having a crush, but how we respond to it. One of the annoying things about crushes is they happen quickly and as son as we realize we are planning our bridesmaid dresses we realize we hardly know him. We realize how horrible it is to do such a thing and purpose never to do that again and realize we start all over again after five minutes. Sooo What should I do?
First of all Sarah has advice on what not to do when you have a crush:
- Don't talk about him with your friends.
- Don't intentionally do anything that will stir up more thoughts about him (i.e. don't put up pictures of him up all your wall :) )
- Don't tell him how you feel about him or give any indications that you might be interested.
- Don't dwell on thoughts of him or let yourself get carried away with dreamy imaginations.
Rather, when thoughts about young men arise (and they will), use these as a springboard to direct you to pray and delight in the Lord. The enemy is going to think twice about stirring up vain thoughts when he realizes that every time the thought comes, you simply turn it into prayer. Or you can also be faithful in bringing forth much fruit and pray for your future husband . She quotes Tit. 2:13. A second way to deal with crushes is to talk with your parents about it. This might be difficult, scary or embarrassing for you, but most likely your parents have already guesses how you are feeling. If you tell them, they will be better able to pray for, protect, and advise you. Confiding in your parents often relieves the pressure on you and may lighten the intensity of your "secret" crush. Sometimes they are able to help you think more realistically about your future and give a new perspective about what type of man they believe the Lord has in store for you. And finally when you are struggling with a crush, exercise faith by purposing to wait for the Lord. If this young man you are thinking about is the right one for you, God has apparently already started the work of bringing you together and will fulfill what He has begun in His perfect time and way. You don't need to do anything. Let God do the work. After all, your life is not really your story- It's God's story. You belong to Him. You represent Him. He is the One who gets the credit and the glory for your life. Do not pray for your own desires to pass. Pray for Ultimate glory to be given to Jesus. That's what you really want-isn't it? And remember, ultimate glory for Jesus means ultimate joy for you.
Sadly the next section is called Surrounded by Alligators (I love my gator friend so I am sad she is gonna use him to say bad stuff :() In the World in which we live, I'm sure you agree that it's difficult to keep our thoughts pure. With everyone talking about romance all the time, worldly pictures posted everywhere you look, inappropriate music playing in stores, and the constant bombardment of temptations from Magazines, the Internet, billboards and television, it certainly doesn't seem to easy to apply Philippians 4:8 and think about that which is true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report. (Why don't they just live in a box with their scriptures if the world is so dang bad?
Thoughts about Thoughts At Bright Lights Ministry they discuss cleanliness and Sarah asks the girl to put on a piece of paper the hardest area in their lives to keep 'clean'. Most of the answers are 'keeping thoughts pure'. You are not the only one with that struggle but Satan wants you to think that you are. He wants us to feel defeated and think that we have failed. She quotes the bible I Cor. 10:13. Anyway, Satan works hard to deceive, confuse, and pollute us with wrong thoughts. It is not merely crushes that we face. Satan attacks in many different ways with thoughts that are vain, wicked, covetous, bitter, and untrue. She quotes II Cor. 10:5. We may not be able to determine what thoughts come into our minds, but we can determine what we do with those thoughts. The alligator spoke many lies to the princess. Some of these lies are ones that we may find ourselves believing. They are subtle, but deadly. It is not enough to just expose or get rid of a wrong thought. We need to replace the lie with truth. God's word is our standard. We must judge every thought according to the truth of scripture. Memorize specific verses relating to lies you are tempted to believe. Meditate on these verses whenever you are tempted to believe that particular lie.
Flee From Human Wisdom-
We as humans often try to come up with our own solutions to life's problems. Our own reasoning simply makes things worse, and the mess we;re in only gets messier. The world doesn't want you to think about the consequences of your actions. It just wants to make you feel good right now. The alligator did not speak a blatant lie to the princess; rather, he tried to mix a lie with some truth. The same way the world does it. The enemy encourages us to take the easy way, to follow the crowd, to reject our parents' counsel, to take matters into our own hands, to seek attention for ourselves, and to compromise our standards. The enemy also throws fiery darts of fear and doubt. He tells us that God's ways won't work, that God has forgotten us, that we are a failure, and that God is against us. She quotes Proverbs 3:5 and Luke 10:27.
This is the BEST part if you all were getting bored. Sarah says if you still struggle with thoughts. Read and memorize scripture every day. Set a goal to memorize entire books of the Bible. Yes people entire BOOKS! Get in the habit of quoting Scripture during spare moments. Think about it as you are going to sleep at night. Engraft the Word of God into your life so that it becomes a part of you. Sarah says this is the most important paragraph in the book because it is not possible to remove wrong or vain thoughts without replacing them with something else. The only way to get rid of darkness is to fill the space with light!
The Suggested memory verse is: "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report: if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think of these things" (Philippians 4:8)]
There is a Suggested Assignment and a testimony about a girl with a crush who guarded her heart.
Next Chapter is... When God Says Wait.
Please feel free to comment. Thanks :)
I haven't read Sarah' s comments yet, but I will. I was afraid that my comment might run too long, so I decided to post my thoughts to the first portion of your review and then post a second comment.
ReplyDeleteThe snobbery that is present throughout this book is very evident in the first chapter. Anyone who disagrees with the King a Queen's parenting choices is either jealous or guilty about their own lives.
The poor peasants are just no smart enough to realize how wise their royal masters are. I hope that there is a revolt in this kingdom! Democracy all the way!
The author wants young people to guard their hearts but she doesn't mind the fact that the princess has quickly developed a crush on Sir Valiant.
My goodness, how rude the princess is to her friend and the gator. Radiant purity apparently creates a young lady who is an obnoxious, little know it all.
In the above statement, I meant, is 'evident in this chapter", not first chapter. Although the snobbery is evident in the first chapter also.
ReplyDeleteOkay, not all of Sarah's advice is horrible this time.
ReplyDeleteNot dwelling too much on crushes is probably good advice to any young person. Of course, I think that helping your children develop their talents and passions will go a long way toward giving them something other then boys to concentrate on. A bored girl in a castle will not have much to think about.
Does Sarah, the author, remind anyone else of Mr. Brocklehurst in Jane Eyre?
On the other hand, experiencing a few crushes and the pain they cause, does allow a young person to realize that real, lasting love is not based on the first rush of emotions. So, I can see value in puppy love.
For those who don't remember Mr. Brocklehurst, he can be found at 7minutes and 10 seconds in this youtube video.

I just hated how Sarah said to memorize complete books of the Bible to not think about crushes WOW
ReplyDeleteI did also. What a way to make a young woman dislike the Bible.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I was talking to my 10 year old about pregnancy before marriage. She said, "Don't worry, Mom. I am going to college and make certain that I can support my kids before I have them!" LOL
awww deb that is cute. It is like College is a form of birth control lol
ReplyDeleteDeb, Brocklehurst is brilliant! He's one of the biggest religious hypocrites in literature, and that's saying something.
ReplyDeleteGo Gator!
Can't wait for the review on Ch. 9, which to me was the most worrisome, especially after reading "Quiverfull." If you haven't done so, buy it new so Kathryn Joyce can write another book about these freaks and wear something to keep your jaw from dropping to the ground every five seconds.
